The 2016 Game Awards Highlights: Winners, Overwatch GotY, Hideo Kojima, That Dragon Cancer

Another year, another Game Awards.

Skip ahead for the videos (via the eternally great Kotaku) of Geoff Keighley’s passionate introduction for Hideo Kojima, and Ryan Green’s powerful speech (creator of That Dragon, Cancer).

GAME OF THE YEAR: Overwatch (Blizzard) – DOOM (id Software/Bethesda), Inside (Playdead), Titanfall 2 (Respawn/Electronic Arts), Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (Naughty Dog/Sony Interactive Entertainment)

Blizzard’s Ray Gresko said, “While we’ve been very happy with how the game has been received, we’re also extremely proud that this game and the world that we’re building has a message and it’s a message about heroism. It’s a message about diversity. It’s a message about a bright and positive and hopeful future. And these are all things that we really believe everyone needs a little bit of right now.”

BEST GAME DIRECTION: Blizzard (for Overwatch) – DICE (for Battlefield 1), id Software (for DOOM), Naughty Dog (for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End), Respawn (for Titanfall 2)

Geoff Keighley pouring his heart out for Hideo Kojima. At last year’s awards, Konami refused to allow Kojima to receive an award because he’d left he company after finishing Metal Gear Solid 5.

Ryan Green’s – That Dragon, Cancer – emotional speech about his game which was about his son’s battle with cancer. Probably the most powerful acceptance speech in gaming history.
